Tuesday's Thoughts: Father's Day- God as your Father

Are you doing anything for Father's Day? Your not? You do not have a father? I know the feeling. Maybe your father died, left you or your parents were divorced. There are many reasons why Father's Day might go by without you doing anything.

I grew up without a celebrating Father's Day. My parents were divorced and I remember those Father's Day crafts we would do in school or church. I remember raising my hand and asking who I could give it to. After going through the list of any other possible male in the family I ended up just giving it to my mom. ☺ My mom was my mom and my dad together but it's just not the same. So here I am, poor child without a dad and that's it. NOPE! The Bible promises us in Psalms 27:10   "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up."

We will look at how God is our Father:

1) He Loves Us

God's love for his children surpasses the love of all human beings put together. God's love is entirely unselfish. It is perfect love. Actually, God is love. (1 John 4: 8) God loved us so much he was willing to die for us. 1 John 4:9   "In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him."

2) He Cares for our Needs

Philippians 4:19  " But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
Our heavenly Father is in heaven and he knows his children. He takes care for us all. He sees what we need and he is ready, willing and able to take care of our needs but like a father he wants to spend time with us and wants us to take our needs to him. He won't just give it to us but he wants us to ask. Talk to your heavenly father and tell him what you need: be it financial, emotional or physical...he can take care of you!

3) He Listens to Us

Our heavenly Father wants to hear from us so much so, that sometimes, he even lets us go through some rough times that we find time to talk to him again. If a child really really wants something don't they go following you around telling you just much they NEED it or how cool it is. Well, God is no different. If you want or need something bad enough you will come and ask...and then he gets to finally hear from you and is more than happy to bless you. But one thing must be pointed out. He doesn't just listen to everyone. He only listens to his children. Those that have accepted him as Savior.
John 9:31   Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

4) He Disciplines Us

This is definitely my least favorite point. None of us like to be disciplined; but a parent, that truly loves their child. will say "no" and even  let them feel consequences for their actions. God in heaven loves us so much and wants us to grow up to be mature Christians. Sadly we all slip into sin and our heavenly Father needs to punish us for our misbehavior. Sometimes it is a reproof from our Bible reading, a sharp rebuke from preaching and if we still do not listen or continue in sin he may let something more serious happen. All he wants is us to do is to straighten up and be in fellowship with him once again.
2 Timothy 3:16   All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

How do I know that God is my father?

Those that except Jesus Christ as the only way into heaven are a child of God.

As we read in the the first point, God loved us so much that he sent his only begotten Son to die for us and he rose again on the third day so that we can now talk to him in heaven. All you have to do is believe in this and receive him as your Saviour and you will be a child of God.

Romans 10:9   That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
John 1:12   But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Even if you cannot celebrate Father's Day with your earthly Father take some time for your heavenly Father and thank him for taking care of you!

  2. Yes. Beautiful post. Even for those of us who did grow up with fathers. My dad is sick, and although he's not young (I guess neither am I, really), the reality that he might not be with me much longer is hitting me hard. But these verses have comforted me lately, too. Thanks for the reminder.
