Night shirt to Day shirt

So I got this nightshirt when I first went to college...but hardly ever wore it. Its nice but the length was uncomfortable and it was so big. Maybe I am weird but I don't like feeling fat...even when I'm going to bed. I decided to make this shirt something I could wear out and about....the colors beautiful and the fun floral pattern is just perfect for me...so here we go......

Get a shirt that fits well and can be used as a general guide....plan how long you want it.

I cut my shirt round on the bottom to add a little more fun.

After you cut the bottom cut along the shirt  your using as a pattern adding 1/4 inch for seam allowance.

I wanted to have little slits on the sides. So I didn't sew all the way down....you can do it either way

Here is how I sewed the little slits on the side....after you sewed down on the side till about 2 inches on the bottom you fold the seam toward their side, pin and sew...

I wanted my sleeves a little shorter....unlike what you see in the picture do NOT cut the sleeve round but cut it STRAIGHT. (I figured that out after sewing on the sleeve 4 times)

Turn the sleeve RIGHT side out....put in the arm hole (the shirt should still be wrong side out). Make sure the bottom seam of the sleeve is inline with the seam of the side of the shirt. Pin....sew.

  2. Very cute! I love the finished product! I really like how you gave it the round hem, too. I've done similar projects before, but now I want to try that with the hem!(: and thank you for the advice about the sleeves--I'll make sure and remember that when I'm deconstructing them.

    1. It gives the basic shirt just a little more flair.
Hahahahaha...on the sleeve....it was ridiculous! But they turned out OK now.

  3. Great job on improving old clothes. I can't afford to go out and buy clothes right now, so I've been trying to sew the ones I have into something new. Also, you should submit some of your creations to this website: http://www.newdressaday.com/

This girl takes thrift store clothing items and sews them into something cool and wearable. I think you would like it.

  6. Curious how you did the empire waist/gathers at the bust? I really like that detail, but there's no explanation. :-)
